SCPS “Okapi”

Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Keter Safe

Special Containment Procedures: The movements of SCP-XXXX are to be constantly monitored and removed from all satellite imaging. The SCPS “Okapi” is to remain in orbit in order to record and transmit messages broadcasted by SCP-XXXX. Foundation webcrawlers are to scan various social media sites for reports of “animals talking”.

While a λ-Events is taking place, all civilians within the affected area are to be evacuated until the event ceases. Civilians exposed to vocalizations are to be amnestied and released upon the cessation of the λ-Event. All video and audio evidence of λ-Events are to be located and destroyed.

All organisms showing signs of λ-Events are to be contained at Site-17 for further testing of SCP-XXXX’s anomalous effects.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a mechanically modified giraffe approximately 36,000 km above Earth. It is unknown if SCP-XXXX is alive due to these alterations, although some observed muscle spazams within the creature suggest some state of living. SCP-XXXX constantly releases high-frequency EMP waves, beta radiations, and a seperate wave of unknown frequency within the human hearing range. Any electronic device exposed to these waves fails, with the source of the failure often being overheating. Living tissue exposed to this frequency will suffer severe tissue mutations that will invariably lead to death. Due to this, identification of SCP-XXXX’s modifications has been difficult. The only modification easily identifiable on the entity is a large horn loudspeaker in the place of SCP-XXXX’s head.

Every 2 months, SCP-XXXX will begin to play a prerecorded message through its loudspeakers in the voice of an unidentified man with a low pitch. This occurrence signifies the beginning of a λ-Event. λ-Events are an unknown phenomenon that cause all vocalizations produced by living creatures (other than humans) to be perceived as onomatopoeia. Both the location of this effect and the duration seem to be random, having recorded incidents last from 20 minutes to 47 hours. Living creatures removed from areas affected by λ-Events cease anomalous vocalizations, while beings brought into the area begin to produce them. Upon th cessation of λ-Events, 89% of affected creatures do not continue to create these vocalizations, while 11% of creatures will continue to only vocalize in onomatopoeia. Creatures that continue showing signs of λ-Events have been designated SCP-XXXX-1. If an instance of SCP-XXXX-1 lacks a complex enough vocal system, producing vocalizations will cause significant strain on the instance’s vocal cords, often leading to irreparable damage and the inability to speak. A partial list of SCP-XXXX-1 instances currently in containment has been provided. For a full list of contained SCP-XXXX-1 instances, see Document XXXX-7RT.

Instance Classification Species Amount Vocalizations Produced
SCP-XXXX-1A Dogs of various breeds 46 Bark, woof, growl, whimper
SCP-XXXX-1C American Quarter Horse 13 Nicker, whinny, bray
SCP-XXXX-1H Various species of fish 37 89 167 Blub, glub, pop
SCP-XXXX-1M Seagull 12 Squawk, caw, shriek, cry
SCP-XXXX-1R Grizzly Bear 2 Growl, roar, grunt, grumble, bellow
SCP-XXXX-1T SCP-(Blackboxes) 1 Chime, ring, ding, clang

The following is a transcript of the prerecorded message played by SCP-XXXX before λ-Events

Addendum: Included below is a selection of previously recorded λ-Events.

Date of λ-Event: September 12th, 1989

Location Affected: Bee Cave, Texas, USA

Duration of Event: ~45 minutes

Containment Efforts: At the time, the existence of SCP-XXXX was unknown to the Foundation. The town was evacuated, with all affected creatures being removed from the town by Foundation personnel. Shortly afterwards, the perimeter of the λ-Event was discovered, with the occurence ceasing shortly afterwards. Civilians were distributed amnesties accordingly and a false report of a tornado briefly touching down was spread.

Date of λ-Event: July 2nd, 1991

Location Affected: Sherkin Island, Ireland

Duration of Event: 7 hours

Containment Efforts: Only a small portion of land was affected by the occurrence, with an unknown amount of water affected by the event. A beach within the affected area was evacuated, citing nearby sightings of Great White Sharks as the reason. Several SCP-XXXX-1 instances were recovered from the event, but an unknown number of affected marine life are believed to have escaped. As no resulting SCP-XXXX-1 instances were observed by the populous, amnestics were deemed unnecessary

Date of λ-Event: October 14th, 1999

Location Affected: Sonoran Desert, Arizona, USA

Duration of Event: 25 hours

Containment Efforts: The only structure affected by the λ-Event was Containment Site-19T, which was constructed to contain SCP-████ on location. Once the event subsided, SCP-████ was converted into an instance of SCP-XXXX-1, completely removing the effects of it’s auditory hazards. SCP-████ has been reclassified as neutralized and is now contained in hopes of using this method to combat other auditory hazards.

Date of λ-Event: April 23rd, 2002

Location Affected: Yeo Lake Nature Reserve, Australia

Duration of Event: 12 hours

Containment Efforts: The one of the largest λ-Events observed, encompassing the entirety of the reserve. Due to its relatively isolated location, the only anmestics required were for several groups of civilians camping within the reserve. An additional 134 SCP-XXXX-1 instances were recovered from the reserve and are currently being held in standard wildlife containment.

Date of λ-Event: Unknown

Location Affected: Sandwich, Kent, UK

Duration of Event: Unknown

Containment Efforts: Instances of SCP-XXXX-1 were located throughout the town, suggesting a large λ-Event previously occurring. No reports of the event have been found, despite ~54 seperate SCP-XXXX-1 instances reported within the town between 2003 and 2004.

Addendum 2: On 5/11/03, SCP-XXXX broadcast a previously unheard message, followed by the largest λ-Event observed to date. The occurrence affected a large portion of Africa, as well as the entirety of the Sudanian Savanna. Foundation personnel were quickly deployed to contain the event. Due to the large presence of wildlife within the affected area, civilians were quickly deployed to contain the anomaly and evacuate civilians. All civilians were eventually evacuated under the guise of an incoming earthquake and a perimeter was established to prevent further civilians from entering. The event lasted an estimated 49 hours, with 96 instances of SCP-XXXX-1 being contained after the event and an estimated 3██ outside of containment. Civilians were administered amnestics as appropriate and a cover story was established.

Once the λ-Event ceased, data from the SCPS “Okapi” revealed that SCP-XXXX had ceased emitting beta radiation. After 4 weeks, a test probe was launched to determine if SCP-XXXX was approachable. It was discovered that although SCP-XXXX has ceased emitting both EMP waves and beta radiation, it was still emitting the unknown frequency at a constant rate. As such, SCP-XXXX is to remain in orbit until a way to neutralize the effect of these waves without harming SCP-XXXX is discovered. The SCPS “Okapi” has been able to observe SCP-XXXX closer and has discovered the following modifications to the entity:

  • The head of SCP-XXXX has been replaced with a large horn loudspeaker of unknown make. The speaker appears to be crudely attached to the neck of SCP-XXXX through thaumaturgic means.
  • A large metal plate set into the front chest of SCP-XXXX. It is believed that this object is the former source of beta radiation and EMP waves emitted from SCP-XXXX. It is unknown if this device is also responsible for the waves still emitted from the entity.
  • The back left leg of SCP-XXXX had been replaced with a modified television satellite dish. The feed horn of the dish has been replaced by a handheld microphone. The purpose of this attachment is unknown, but it is theorized to have been partially responsible for λ-Events.
  • A section of SCP-XXXX’s epidermis has been replaced with a large viewing window, allowing vision into the torso of the entity. This window reveals that SCP-XXXX contains no organs within it’s torso, along with a missing ribcage. The circulatory system of SCP-XXXX has been replaced with various wires and cords of unknown use. The skeletal remains of an unknown individual are visible within the chest cavity of SCP-XXXX. Several of the wires incorporated into SCP-XXXX extend from it into the remains, most notably the eye sockets and mouth of the skull.

The alterations to SCP-XXXX have been identified as:

(Level 4) On 14/6/19Blackboxes, a -Event occurred of unknown size approximately 5.4 km off of the coast of the Galápagos Islands. During this event, SCP-XXXX played a new message from it’s megaphone. The -Event lasted for 49 hours before ceasing. Aquatic life recovered from the area showed a much higher rate affected beings becoming instances of SCP-XXXX-1. This message has only been played once, with following events playing the regular message.

Message - “Brothers, our time has come. We need you to utilize your gifts in order for us to reach perfect harmonic balance. Sing fellows, sing and cheer as loud as you can. Let everyone hear your melodies. You will finally become part of our orchestra, our harmony, our Melodic Menagerie.”
