Description: SCP-X refers to seven instances, -1 through -7, each of which is a swarm of butterflies1 flying in the formation of a humanoid silhouette. Whilst the butterflies comprising each instance can move freely within the silhouette, the movement patterns of each instance mirror human gait. All seven instances are comprised of five species: hamaerisa lucina, danaus plexippus, apatura iris, vanessa cardui, and gonepteryx rhamni.2
SCP-X instances have anomalously long life cycles3 with no need for sustenance. Instances have displayed highly limited sentience, with activity restricted to movement alone, with no interaction with external stimuli. If over 20% of the composite butterflies are removed from an SCP-X instance, remaining butterflies will no longer fly in silhouette formation, and no longer display anomalous properties.
SCP-X is currently linked to seven missing persons residing in █████, a small, rural town in Texas, United States of America. All instances were discovered in the residential properties of the missing persons (who all lived alone), as well as a broken chrysalis formed of several different types of human tissue, including bone, hair, muscle, and coagulated blood. In each instance, this tissue is a genetic match to the missing individual.
Foundation investigations identified a telephone number called by all seven missing persons in the week prior to their disappearance. The number is not, nor has ever been listed as, in use, and calls to it are not connected. The only other record of the number is in an advertisement in █████'s local newspaper, The █████ Herald:
