Politics

Xulia's politics, like those across most of the East Continent, are strange to outsiders. Different areas called "Shunya" and run by a collection of Shoguns and Daimyo, with one Shogun and one Daimyo in each Shunya. Major decisions are made by the Shoguns and Daimyo collectively, with the Silk Emporer mediating disputes and acting as a tie-breaker during votes. The Silk Emporer also acts as the commander-in-chief of the military during times of war. Succesion of Emporers is not through primogeniture, instead, a Shogun or Daimyo is elevated to the position through a vote of all Xulian citizens. Shoguns oversee military and police matters in their Shunya, and Daimyo oversee public matters, civil suits, taxes, and public works. Excessive quarreling between any leaders of the Shunya is strictly forbidden. Enforcing this rule is the duty of the Silk Emporer, the Zhaolong Sēng, and the citizens.

Culture

Society is based around attaining spiritual¹ and/or martial perfection. However, the two are not mutually exclusive. In fact, their society is largely based around the fact that they are not. They also do not worship gods in the way most do, focusing instead on practicing Wánměi, perfection². Their gods are those who have achieved Wánměi. The Zhaolong monastic order and the Sēng(Monks) who make them up are regarded by many as the greatest mortal practitioners of Wánměi, however, even they will tell you that each thing's journey on the path of Wánměi is their own.

Few of Xulia's citizens live in poverty, due to the nation's many lucrative exports, and the nobility's and upper-class' deep-rooted and fearful³ respect for the peasantry. However, the classes do get along well most of the time. Most Xulians, from the Shoguns, to the Sēng, to the ordinary citizens tend to be rowdy, fun-loving folks. The type who go out for a night at the tavern, drink a glass or three of Sake, and are loudly singing on top of the tables even before they're actually drunk. Whether law or chaos-aligned, Xulian is a good person to have watching your back, and a loyal friend.

Politics

Fódhla (pron. foe-luh) is a land of various territories controlled by finte (pron. fin-chuh, often referred to as clans by outsiders). Most finte swear loyalty to a large, powerful fine (fin, singular of finte) that controls a relatively large area by dint of those who are loyal to it. Finte are ostensibly all related but are always made up of a great number of families. Marriage within one's own finte (but not direct family) is common - and frequently preferred by those of a traditional bent.

Finte are ruled by monarchs who can be removed from power for misconduct or by a significant majority of the families within their rule. They appoint a deputy who is in a similar position to a royal heir. This need not be their blood descendant but must be of the ruling family of a finte. Monarchs of finte who control whole provinces hold the title King or Queen. Monarchs employ a bard of some renown as a sort of head envoy, who will handle many matters related to diplomacy. Disputes over territory and trade are common and, while they typically settled by the word of a province's ruler, often come to blows.

Due to the finte structure it is very rare for any one fine to control the whole country and it is rare for a High King of Fódhla to exist but it has happened at various times by means of diplomacy or conquest. Yet more rarely, an existential threat to the nation as a whole may cause a High King to be elected from among the leading finte of various provinces to combat the threat. Theoretically, the High King's deputy will become High King upon the High King's death but such appointments have not been known to last.

Various small finte of many races exist in the country, and it is common that a small finte will be of a particular race but larger finte that control a large area will typically consist of many races. Fighting within or between finte on racial grounds is rare.

Military

Each finte is expected to be able to raise a small army and it is rare for all but the most disaster-struck finte to be unable to fulfill this. Coastal areas sometimes raise small navies instead but are still more than capable of defending themselves internally.

Due to the diversity of the people, many different forces and weapons can be found on Fódhla but many forces default to lighter "hit and run" weapons for cattle raids, the most common form of internal military dispute. Magic is rarely used in an offensive capacity in such disputes.

On the few occasions that Fódhla unifies to fight off an invader, the invader can expect themselves to face the full magical might of enraged druids, and a constantly-changing array of tactics from various small armies. While this may often be seen as disorganised, it is typically a concerted effort by various leaders to prevent an enemy from organizing a coherent attack or defense while druids rally the magic of the land to tear into invading armies.

Culture

The people of Fódhla are diverse but hardy and typically share an affinity for the land and ability to thrive in harsh conditions. While many of them would fare poorly in desert climates, they think little of freezing sleet, driving rain, and howling winds. Many races have made homes in Fódhla over centuries and are often tolerated soon after gaining a foothold so long as they do not intend to take a whole province or, indeed, the entire country.

It is sometimes said that if two Fódhlans are given a subject they will have three opinions and this is often borne out by their enthusiastic, good-natured, arguing. While such arguments may come to blows when mead is involved, it's not uncommon for two who just fought to walk home arm in arm - albeit a little unsteadily. Rowdy celebrations and drinking are common - the old Fódhlan word for whiskey translates literally as "the water of life."

Weak leaders - either physically or mentally - will not be tolerated among Fódhlans and they enjoy word games as much as they do physical contest. Although this makes them canny traders, most are content to trade with whoever comes to the ports and cities.

Fódhlans often emigrate to see the world, adventure, or seek employment. Many send money or goods home to their family, and most return to visit when they can.

Various physical sports are practiced in Fódhla and athletes find great renown but little in the way of direct pay. That said, in a society where money is rarely used, being invited to the best parties is, perhaps, pay in itself.

Gods

The gods of Fódhla similarly relate strongly to the land, with druids being more common than priests. The mythology of Fódhla has much related to the revival of various peoples in the land, often bringing their gods with them who then become part of the Fódhlan patheon or join with another Fódhlan god. Triune gods are common and some Fódhlan gods are thought to be the same deity under many names.

Temples are uncommon outside of port cities, and druids are treated with great respect even by kings. Fódhlans will attempt to avoid harming nature and will refuse to build or clear land in areas where it would do so - including those that have emigrated. Oak trees in particular are sacred to most Fódhlans.

External religions are tolerated but rarely practiced among natives.

Trade

The main exports of Fódhla are textiles, typically wool and linens, while cattle prove an important part of the internal economy. Artwork with stylized and abstract designs are often traded externally also. Mead and whiskey are traded both externally and internally also. Barter is more common than the use of coin internally, but among those who trade externally coin is held to be "almost as valuable as cattle."

Imports are primarily luxury goods, with little need for staples.

Most trade takes place in port cities, with dedicated traders carrying luxury goods around to provincial capitals.

Fódhla

Hallmarks of Ancestry
Celtic born are physically fit; be it lithe and nimble or large and brawny - their bodies are shaped by a lifetime of fighting and surviving.

Aside from their physical prowess, there is another thing that sets the Celtic born apart from other humanoid races - Their shamans paint intricate patterns on each tribe member who has come of age, each and every pattern unique. It is speculated that the spirits of the deceased or perhaps the Gods themselves guide the hand of the shamans into these patterns, connecting the fighter with his ancestors. This religious ritual is important, if not the most important, part of the preparation for war. The bright blue warpaint is made up of woad and lard. The woad is corrosive - it contracts the skin, getting the adrenaline pumping for battle and in many cases, it even scars the skin over, causing many warriors to be permanently marked by their unique patterns. Their ever-present warpaint has earned them the name "Pict Warriors", which derives from an ancient language, meaning "Painted Warriors".

They are often found wearing tunics made of wool or linen, with simple armlets. Their winter attire includes a heavy cloak as well, with a rim of animal fur. These cloaks are often adorned with a brooch in the shape of their tribe sigil that holds it together.

Ancient Tradition
You are the result of generations of conflict - born and bred for battle, you stand tall in the face of adversity. Your kind has adapted to the harsh wilderness they have always called home. While they often live far from other races, different Celtic born tribes often fight among each other; this raiding and hunting is not done for territorial gain or to exert political control, but for sport.

Celtics strongly believe that the head is the seat of the soul and thus, when a raid is over, the heads of their fallen allies and personal foes alike are collected. The heads of allies are placed in purpose-built temples in the village, adorned with candles and riches to aid the passing into the afterlife. Meanwhile, the heads of foes are nailed to walls or left dangling from the saddle of a horse. The weapons of the enemy are ritualistically broken and buried in a mass grave alongside their bodies.

Life in the Tribe
Tribes strongly depend on nature and have a great respect for the spirits around them. While men are the primary hunters and protectors of the tribe, women are well versed in the art of battle, with all youngsters being trained and encouraged equally from a young age.

As soon as a child’s physical prowess and personality have developed, they are tested in a series of tasks alongside their peers; these may include but are not limited to; joining in a hunt lead by an adult, fighting each other in hand-to-hand combat or applying each other’s first warpaints. These rites of passage do not only instate them as fully functional part of the tribe but also serve as training for their future roles in the tribe. Each tribe consists of a trinity of forces: The Warrior, the Seeker, and the Shaman all play their part, not only in battle but in everyday life as well.

The role of a seeker is reserved for those who are lithe and nimble. They prefer to take a stealthy approach to war, taking on the role of a scout who seeks out enemy encampments. In society, they are the hunters, providing meat and fish for the tribe. Outside of their hunting activities, they can be found doing a variety of odd jobs for the tribe which ranges from repairing armor to cooking to standing guard and tending to the horses of the tribe.

A warrior lives a simple life; they train for a large portion of the day. This training seeps into their work as well; they often work in construction and smithing - work that requires a lot of heavy manual labor. Their hulking bodies are often far larger than those of their tribemates and they put it to good use. In battle, they stand at the front lines, be it on horseback or on foot.

Among these warrior-filled tribes, there are those who are far more attuned to nature; the tribe's Shamans have long since surpassed human abilities in spells and nature. They commune with nature spirits and animals alike. These animals often are found comfortably walking the village, unharmed by anyone in the tribe. Shamans spend their days collecting and grow various herbs and berries to use in potions and salves. While many shamans often partake in battle in the backline, the part they play starts long before the battle and ends only when they have tended to all the wounded after the said battle.

Curiously, the role a youngster will take on in the tribe seems to be determined at birth; Warriors are born large, heavy and with a surprisingly strong grip for their tiny baby fingers. The physical differences between Seekers and Shamans might be harder to distinguish as both are born small. It is said animals are immediately drawn to the cradle in which druids lay though, protecting them from birth. Seekers physically develop faster than both the other subraces - they master a stumbling walk before many druids or warriors have learned to crawl. The role of a child is not determined by the parents but seemingly at random. The chance on each subrace is equal, ensuring a tribe will never lack one of the cornerstones of its trinity.

Celtic names derive from old Common words. These words are often related to nature or battle like Cillian ("War" or "Strife"), but can be descriptive, such as Cael, which means "slender or narrow" or Kamren, which means "crooked nose".

Celtic Born Traits
Your Celtic born has several traits as a result of their ancestry and ancient bond with nature.
Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution score increases by 2.
Age. Celtic born mature at the same rate as humans. Due to their attunement with nature, it is not uncommon for Celtic born to live up to 120 years.
Alignment. While most Celtic born are neutral good, those who leave the tribe may lean to chaotic neutral, as they value their own freedom and refuse to respect authority outside of their own chieftains.
Size. Ranging from 5'4 to 5'9 feet tall a Celtic born's muscular body usually weighs more than their average height's let on. Your size is Medium.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 35 feet.
Ancestral Link. At 1st level, you have only just begun to learn your pattern. The woad bites into your skin harshly, causing your adrenaline to start pumping through your veins. Your base walking speed is 35 feet. Starting at 3rd level, you have fought many battles since your warpaint was first applied. Your skin has long since scarred over and has become numb to the pain of its corrosion. As an action, you can channel the spirits of your ancestors within yourself, causing the warpaint that once covered each of your honored ancestors to become visible throughout your body. Your transformation lasts for 1 minute or until you end it as a bonus action. During it, your walking speed increases by 5 feet, you gain temporary hit points at the beginning of each of your turns equal to your proficiency bonus and once on each of your turns, you can deal extra damage to one target when you deal damage to it with an attack or a spell. The extra damage equals your level and the damage type is that of the attack. Once you channel the spirits of your ancestors, you can't do so again until you finish a long rest.
Attuned. Celtic born are have a natural connection to nature and their lifestyle, as well as cultural values, leads to them being a race with a greater understanding of the environment. You are proficient in the Nature skill.
Brave. You have advantage on saving throws against being frightened.
Toughness. Your natural athleticism and primal lifestyle grants you increased fortitude. Your hit point maximum increases by 1, and it increases by 1 every time you gain a level.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write in Common and one other language of your choice. Warriors may learn the language of a creature they regularly hunt like goblinoids, kobold or even giants. Seekers may learn the primary or secondary language of nearby settlements to better converse with their neighbors. Shamans often learn Sylvan or Primordial to better connect with the natural world.
Subrace. The ancient societal roles passed down from one generation to the next have led to three main subraces: Warriors, Seekers, or Shaman. Choose one of these subraces.

Warrior

Warriors are amongst the strongest of the tribe. They rely on their raw power to get them through each battle.
Ability Score Increase. Your Strength score increases by 1.
Powerful Strike. When you score a critical hit with a weapon attack, you can force the struck creature to make a Constitution saving throw to avoid being knocked prone. The DC for this saving throw equal to 8 + your Strength modifier + your proficiency bonus.

Seeker

Seekers are fast and nimble and are better at remaining stealthy, making up for their lack of raw strength with agility.
Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity score increases by 1.
Focused Rush. When you score a critical hit with a weapon attack, you get a surge of adrenaline and you can move up to your movement speed without provoking attacks of opportunity.

Shaman

Shamans are completely attuned to nature. They often prefer communication with animals over humans.
Ability Score Increase. Your Wisdom score increases by 1.
Woodland Bond. Through sounds, gestures, and ancient hymns, you have the ability to communicate in a limited manner with beasts and plants. They can understand the meaning of your words, and, if able to, may respond in a limited manner. A flower may bend in the direction of what you seek and an ocelot may guide you out of the depths of the forest.

Tortles

Physical Description

Tortles are humanoid tortoises. They walk upright. They have leathery, reptilian skin, and shells that cover their backs and bellies. An adult Tortle typically stands just under 6 feet tall and weighs more than 750 pounds.

Tortles have no hair, and their backshells are usually shinier and darker than their skin, while their front shells tend to be lighter, with a yellowish cast. A Tortle's mouth is beak-like and toothless and can deliver a vicious bite.

Tortles are stocky, but most of their weight comes from their shells, so they tend to remain at the same weight throughout their adult lives, never growing fat or thin. Their arms and hands are shaped like those of humans, but thicker. Tortles can wield most weapons as easily as humans, though they usually do not wear clothing, only sometimes wearing cloaks, belts, or harnesses for carrying tools and supplies.

Tortles who are clerics, monks or paladins worship one of the following four deities:

Tortles believe that these four gods work together in harmony, keeping the balance of nature intact and sharing prosperity with those who worship them.

What many tortles consider a simple life, others might call a life of adventure. Tortles are born near sandy coastlines, in dry deserts, on cold mountaintops, or in muggy wetlands, but as soon as they're able to walk on two legs, they become nomad survivalists eager to explore the wilderness, experience its many wonders, put their skills to the test, make new acquaintances, and find anything else the world has to offer.

Age. Tortles can live up to 350 to 380 years, the average is 365
Alignment. Tortles tend to be chaotic good.
Size. Your size is Medium.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 25 feet. Your swimming speed is 30 feet.
Shell. You have a hard shell that protects you from harm. Your Armor Class is equal to 13 + your Constitution modifier.
Hold Breath. You can hold your breath underwater for 1 hour.
Retreat to Shell. Using an action, you can pull your head and limbs into your shell for up to an hour. While retreating, you are prone, your speed is 5 feet and you are resistant to non-magical piercing, slashing, and bludgeoning damage. Once used you cannot use this feature against until you complete a short or long rest.
Turtle Snapper. Your mouth cuts through leaf and flesh like butter. Whenever you hit a creature with a melee attack on your turn, as a bonus action you can make a melee attack against the same enemy. If you hit with them, you deal piercing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier.

Languages You can speak, read, and write Common and Aquan.

Subraces there are three subraces of tortle: Razorback, Softshell, Desert. Pick one.

Razorback

Razorback Tribes can be found in swamps, marshlands, or high, mountainous areas, typically Xulia if the latter due to an old, long-forgotten, but happily maintained alliance. They are loud, rowdy, and slow to trust, but once you have that trust and loyalty, it is a difficult thing to lose. Their shells are covered in sharp ridges and barbs and are sometimes decorated in paints. They're on the shorter side, averaging five and a half feet, with short necks and a stocky, squat build.

Ability Score Increase. Your Strength and Constitution scores increase by 1.
Razorback. When you are struck by a creature within 5 feet of you, you can use your reaction to cause that creature to take 1d4 piercing damage from the barbs on your shell.
Razor Fist. Your barbed fists are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal piercing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.
Life In The Swamps: Razorback Tortles have adapted to a life spent in wetlands and rocky mountains. They gain the benefits of a Ranger's Favored Terrain in wetlands and mountains regardless of class, and know the Shillelagh cantrip.

Softshell

Softshell Tribes can be found near the coast, or by riversides. They're the most friendly of all three types, and the most willing to help strangers. They enjoy both amusing and protecting each other and anyone else they might meet. Their shells are flat, They do not offer much protection but make them especially agile.

Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity and Charisma scores increase by 1.
Softshell. A softshell tortle loses its Shell and Retreat into Shell traits. Instead, your Armor Class is equal to 13 + your Dexterity modifier.
Softshell Agility. Your base walking speed increases to 30 feet. In addition, your swimming speed increases to 40 feet.
Life On The Sea: Softshell Tortles have adapted to a life spent in and near the ocean. They can manipulate currents to double their swimming speed for up to 10 minutes, and know the Shape Water cantrip.
Outgoing Nature +2 to Performance and Persuasion checks.

Desert

Desert Tribes can be found in the desert or in other arid or mountainous areas. Desert tortles are quiet and reserved, typically preferring to spend their lives wandering their sandy homes, studying tomes they collect through their lifetimes, carrying these and other belongings on and in their backs. though when one becomes an adventurer, they throw themselves into like they do in all things. Their shells are hard round domes, smooth like they were polished by sands picked up by the wind. They're a bit above average in height, with wide, thick builds, relatively small heads and necks. Their shells and skin are shades of brown and yellow.

Ability Score Increase. Your Wisdom and Intelligence scores increase by 1, but your Charisma will decrease by 1.
Nomad. You are proficient in the Survival skill and you are acclimated to extreme heat, as described in chapter 5 of the Dungeon Master’s Guide.
Shell Master. A desert tortle can use its sturdy shell to negate damaging blows. When you make a Dexterity saving throw, you can instead use your Constitution modifier. You can do this a number of times equal to your Constitution modifier before you must complete a long rest to regain all expended uses.
Shallow Shell Desert tortles are much leaner than the other subraces, as they've evolved to subsist on less. This has lead to some of the flesh pulling back from their shells, leaving an open space. Up to 65 pounds of items can be stored, or less depending on DM rulings. This space can be pulled shut using a bonus action to prevent theft, unless an item stored would prevent it. Blocking items may also be broken when closing the shell. The shell must be closed to use the Retreat To Shell.
Life In The Desert: Desert Tortles have adapted to a life spent in dry deserts. They gain the benefits of a Ranger's Favored Terrain in deserts regardless of class, and know the Mold Earth cantrip.

Favored Enemy
Beginning at 1st level, you can focus your awareness on a single creature, quickly learning to anticipate its actions and retaliate against its attacks.

As a bonus action, you can designate a creature you can see within 100 feet of you and mark it as your favored enemy. Alternatively, when you attack a creature, you can the target of the attack as your favored enemy as part of the attack. Regardless of how you mark a favored enemy, you can you use this ability once during your turn. The target remains your favored enemy until you use this ability again.

You gain advantage on all Wisdom and Intelligence checks to detect your favored enemy, follow its tracks, and to determine its actions and motives.

Once during your turn, you can make an additional melee or ranged weapon attack against your favored enemy. You gain a number of uses of this ability equal to half your ranger level (minimum of 1, rounded up), and regain all expended uses when you complete a long rest.

If you have a similar ability, such as the hunter's mark spell or Slayer's Prey feature, both effects can be active at the same time, but can't be directed at the same target.

Starting at 6th level, you gain advantage on all saving throws made against effects created by your favored enemy.

Starting at 17th level, once during your turn, if you miss with a weapon attack against your favored enemy, you can make an additional weapon attack against it.

Favored Terrain
You are particularly familiar with one type of natural environment and are adept at traveling and surviving in such regions. Choose one type of favored terrain, and you gain the benefits of that terrain at all times.

In addition, you are considered proficient in the Nature skill while in your favored terrain. If you are already proficient in this skill, your proficiency bonus is doubled while in your favored terrain.

At 10th level, you choose an additional favored terrain. You are encouraged to choose a terrain in which you have spent significant time, but you are free to choose any option.

Arctic
You gain resistance to cold damage, and are unaffected by extremely cold environments.

Coast
You gain a swim speed equal to your speed, and can hold your breath for twice as long as normal.

Desert
You gain resistance to fire damage, and are unaffected by extremely hot environments.

Fen
You gain resistance to poison damage and are immune to diseases.

Forest
You gain proficiency in the Wisdom (Perception) skill, and your proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check you make that uses this skill, and you gain a +5 bonus to your passive Perception.

Grassland
Your speed increases by 10 feet, and you are unaffected by non-magical difficult terrain.

Mountain
You gain a climb speed equal to your speed, and you can breathe normally in elevations up to 10,000 feet.

Underdark
You learn Undercommon. If you do not have darkvision, you gain it with a range of 30 feet. If you have darkvision, you instead gain blindsight with a range of 5 feet.

Urban
When you are not in combat, you (and your group) can travel between any two locations in a city twice as fast as your speed would normally allow. In addition, you gain proficiency in Deception, Intimidation, Performance, or Persuasion.

Fighting Style
At 2nd level, you adopt a particular style of fighting as your specialty. Choose one of the following options. You can’t take a Fighting Style option more than once.

Archery
You gain a +2 bonus to attack rolls you make with ranged weapons.

Defense
While you are wearing armor, you gain a +1 bonus to AC.

Dueling
When you are wielding a melee weapon in one hand and no other weapons, you gain a +2 bonus to damage rolls with that weapon.

Mariner
As long as you are not wearing heavy armor or using a shield, you have a climbing and swimming speed equal to your normal movement speed, and you gain a +1 bonus to your AC.

Two-Weapon Fighting
When you engage in two-weapon fighting, you can add your ability modifier to the damage of the second attack.

Variant. When you engage in two-weapon fighting, your
off-hand attack can be made as a part of the attack action, instead of using a bonus action. (This variant rule replaces the standard rules for this Fighting Style.)

Poultices
At 2nd level, you can create special herbal poultices that have healing power comparable to some potions. You can spend 1 hour gathering herbs and preparing herbal poultices, and you can do this during a short rest or at the end of a long rest.

You can create and carry a number of such poultices equal to your Wisdom modifier (minimum 1). The poultices you create cannot be applied by anyone but you, and after 24 hours, any poultices that you haven't used lose their potency.

If you spend 1 minute applying one of your poultices to a wounded humanoid creature, thereby expending its use, that creature regains 1d6 hit points. This healing increases at certain levels, indicated by the Poultice Healing column of the Ranger table.

Natural Explorer
You are a master of navigating the natural world and wandering the wilderness. Starting at 3rd level, you gain the following benefits:

Difficult terrain doesn't slow your group’s travel.
Your group can’t become lost except by magical means.
Even when you are engaged in another activity while traveling (such as foraging, navigating, or tracking), you remain alert to danger.
If you are traveling alone, you can move stealthily at a normal pace.
When you forage, you find twice as much food as you normally would.

Ranger Conclave
At 3rd level, you choose to emulate the ideals and training of a ranger conclave: the Beast Conclave, the Hunter Conclave, the Stalker Conclave, the Walker Conclave, or the Slayer Conclave, all detailed at the end of the class description. Your choice grants you features at 3rd level, and again at 7th, 11th, and 15th level.

Ability Score Improvement
When you reach 4th level, and again at 8th, 12th, 16th, and 19th level, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or you can increase two ability scores of your choice by 1. As normal, you can’t increase an ability score above 20 using this feature.

Extra Attack
Beginning at 5th level, you can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn.

Natural Antivenom
Starting at 9th level, you have advantage on saving throws against poison.

Additionally, you can use one of your poultices to cure one poison effect or one disease on the creature you are applying it to, in addition to restoring hit points.

Hide in Plain Sight
Starting at 10th level, you can remain perfectly still for long periods of time to set up ambushes. On your turn, if you do not spend any movement and take the Hide action, creatures that attempt to detect you take a −10 penalty to their Wisdom (Perception) checks until the start of your next turn.

You lose this benefit if you move or fall prone, either voluntarily or because of some external effect. You are still automatically detected if any effect or action causes you to no longer be hidden. If you are still hidden on your next turn, you can continue to remain motionless and gain this benefit until you are detected.

Natural Predator
Beginning at 13th level, you react with swift and decisive action when attacked. You have advantage on initiative rolls, and on your first turn during combat, you have advantage on attack rolls against creatures that have not yet acted.

Vanish
Starting at 14th level, you can use the Hide action as a bonus action on your turn. Also, you can’t be tracked by nonmagical means, unless you choose to leave a trail.

Feral Senses
At 18th level, you gain preternatural senses that help you fight creatures you can’t see. When you attack a creature you can’t see, your inability to see it doesn’t impose disadvantage on your attack rolls against it.

You are also aware of the location of any invisible creature within 30 feet of you, provided that the creature isn’t hidden from you and you aren’t blinded or deafened.

Foe Slayer
At 20th level, you become an unparalleled hunter. Once on each of your turns, you can add your Wisdom modifier to the attack roll or the damage roll of an attack you make against a favored enemy. You can choose to use this feature before or after the roll, but before any effects of the roll are applied.

Ranger Conclaves
Across the wilds, rangers come together to form conclaves: loose associations whose members share a similar outlook on how to protect nature from those who would despoil it.

Conclave Magic
The original Ranger class has a 2nd-level spellcasting feature, and most ranger archetypes include an expanded spell list. For a Martial Ranger that chooses one of these conclaves, use the following language for this feature instead.

"Starting at 3rd level, you learn a spell when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown in the Conclave Spells table. You can cast each spell once, and you regain all uses of this feature when you finish a long rest."

Beast Master Conclave
Many rangers are more at home in the wilds than in civilization, to the point where animals consider them kin. Rangers of the Beast Master Conclave develop a close bond with a beast, which is further strengthened through magical means.

Beast Master Magic
Starting at 3rd level, you learn one of the following spells: animal friendship, beast bond, or speak with animals. You can learn an additional spell with this feature when you reach 5th level, and again at 9th, 13th, and 17th levels.

Each spell can be cast once per long rest, or cast as a ritual if it has the ritual tag.

Starting at 5th level, you can choose either animal messenger or beast sense with this ability.

Animal Companion
At 3rd level, you learn to use your magic to create a powerful bond with a creature of the natural world.

With 8 hours of work and the expenditure of 50 gp worth of rare herbs and fine food, you call forth an animal from the wilderness to serve as your faithful companion. Your companion can be any single, unaligned beast that is Large or smaller, and has a challenge rating of 1/2 or less. However, your DM might pick an animal for you, based on the surrounding terrain and on what types of creatures would logically be present in the area.

At the end of the 8 hours, your animal companion appears and gains all the benefits of your Companion’s Bond ability. You can have only one animal companion at a time.

If your animal companion is ever slain, the magical bond you share allows you to return it to life. With 8 hours of work and the expenditure of 25 gp worth of rare herbs and fine food, you call forth your companion’s spirit and use your magic to create a new body for it. You can return an animal companion to life in this manner even if you do not possess any part of its body.

If you use this ability to return a former companion to life while you have a current beast companion, your current beast leaves you and is replaced by the restored companion.

No More Multiattack…
Multiattack is a useful design tool that keeps monsters simple for the DM. It provides a boost in offence, but that boost is meant to make a beast threatening for one battle — a notion that doesn't mesh well with a beast intended to fight with the party, rather than against it. Project Multiattack across an entire adventure, and an animal companion runs the risk of outclassing the fighters and barbarians in the party.

So, in story terms, your animal companion has traded in some of its ferocity (in the form of Multiattack), for better awareness and the ability to fight more effectively in concert with you.

Keeping Track of Proficiency
When you gain your animal companion at 3rd level, its proficiency bonus matches yours at +2. As you gain levels and increase your proficiency bonus, remember that your companion's proficiency bonus improves as well, and is applied to the following areas: Armor Class, skills, saving throws, attack bonuses, and damage rolls. That's a lot!

Companion’s Bond
Your animal companion gains a variety of benefits while it is bonded to you. The companion loses its ability to cause poison damage, as well as its Multiattack action, if it has either feature.

Your companion acts on your turn. During your turn, you can verbally command your companion to move (no action required by you). You can also use your bonus action to verbally command it to take the Attack, Dash, Disengage, or Help action. If you don't command your companion to take any action, it takes the Dodge action. If you are incapacitated or absent, your companion acts on its own.

In addition, when you take the Attack action on your turn, you can forgo one of your attacks and have your companion use its reaction to make a melee attack. Your companion must be able to see you to take this action.

Your animal companion benefits from your Favored Enemy feature, and you can choose for your companion to make an additional attack against a favored enemy, though the number of times this attack can be made is shared by both you and your companion. Your animal companion also benefits from your Natural Explorer feature.

As part of the bond that you share, your companion's abilities are amended from its original statistics. Its highest ability score is set to 16 unless it is already higher, and its Constitution score is set to 14 unless it is already higher.

In addition, your level determines some of your companion's statistics. It uses your proficiency bonus rather than its own and adds this bonus to its AC, attack and damage rolls, two skills of your choice, and all saving throws.

For each level you gain after 3rd, your animal companion gains an additional hit die and increases its hit points accordingly.

Whenever you gain the Ability Score Improvement class feature, your companion’s abilities also improve. Your companion can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or it can increase two ability scores of your choice by 1. As normal, your companion can’t increase an ability score above 20 using this feature.

Finally, your companion shares your alignment, has one or two personality traits, and a flaw that you can roll for or select from the Companion's Traits table. Your companion shares your ideal, and its bond is always, “The ranger who travels with me is a beloved companion for whom I would gladly give my life.”

Magic Companion
At 7th level, your companion's attacks are considered magical for overcoming resistances and immunities.

Bestial Fury
Starting at 11th level, when you command your companion to take the Attack action, the beast can make two attacks, or it can take the Multiattack action if it has that action.

Superior Beast’s Defense
Beginning at 15th level, when an attacker that you can see hits your beast companion with an attack, you can call out a warning. If your beast companion can hear you, it can use its reaction to halve the attack’s damage against it.

Hunter Conclave
Some rangers seek to master weapons to better protect civilization from the terrors of the wilderness. Members of the Hunter Conclave learn specialized fighting techniques for use against the most dire threats, from rampaging ogres and hordes of orcs to towering giants and terrifying dragons.

Hunter Spells
Starting at 3rd level, you learn a spell when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown in the Hunter Spells table. You can cast each spell once, and you regain all uses of this feature when you finish a long rest.

Hunter's Prey

At 3rd level, you gain one of the following features of your choice. Any time that you gain an additional feature from this Conclave, you may also change your choice for this feature.

Colossus Slayer. Your tenacity can wear down the most potent foes. When you hit a creature with a weapon attack, the creature takes an extra 1d8 damage if it’s below its hit point maximum. You can deal this extra damage only once per turn.

Giant Killer. When a Large or larger creature within 5 feet of you hits or misses you with an attack, you can use your reaction to attack that creature immediately after its attack, provided that you can see the creature.

Horde Breaker. Once on each of your turns when you make a weapon attack, you can make another attack with the same weapon against a different creature that is within 5 feet of the original target and within range of your weapon.

Defensive Tactics

At 7th level, you gain one of the following features of your choice. Any time that you gain an additional feature from this Conclave, you may also change your choice for this feature.

Escape the Horde. Opportunity attacks against you are made with disadvantage.

Multiattack Defense. When a creature hits you with an attack, you gain a +4 bonus to AC against all subsequent attacks made by that creature for the rest of the turn.

Steel Will. You have advantage on saving throws against being frightened.

Uncanny Dodge. When an attacker that you can see hits you with an attack, you can use your reaction to halve the attack's damage against you.

Multiattack

At 11th level, you gain the following actions. You can take these multiattack actions a number of times equal to your Wisdom modifier, and regain all uses of this feature when you finish a long rest.

Volley. You can use your action to make a ranged attack against any number of creatures within 10 feet of a point you can see within your weapon's range. You must have ammunition for each target, as normal, and you make a separate attack roll for each target.

Whirlwind. You can use your action to make melee attacks against any number of creatures within 5 feet of you, with a separate attack roll for each target.

Superior Hunter's Defense

At 15th level, you gain one of the following features.

Evasion. When you are subjected to an effect, such as a red dragon's fiery breath or a lightning bolt spell, that allows you to make a Dexterity saving throw to take only half damage, you instead take no damage if you succeed on a saving throw, and only half damage if you fail.

Stand Against the Tide. When a hostile creature misses you with a melee attack, you can use your reaction to force that creature to repeat the same attack against another creature (other than itself) of your choice.

Adamantine	500-1000 gp	20-25	A more durable alternative to electrum or silver, it's an alloy of the two. Shatters if broken. Depending on the purity with which an adamantine object is forged, it will take either a dull white or black color with a sheen that shines more brilliantly than pure adamantine. It almost glows purple-white or black when exposed to magical energies. Pure adamantine is a beautiful, full white or black color, with a weaker sheen than adamantine alloyed with steel. Ornamental magic items are typically pure, as even the weaker sheen is impressive in a parlor, though for adventurers, nothing terrifies an enemy like seeing someone turn a dull, tarnished sword into a shining, sharpened blade of magic power with a word.	Like gold is the best conducter of electricity, adamantine is the best conducter of magical energy, and has exactly the right properties for making armor and weapons. Purity only affects the look of it, so, if it's alloyed again with steel or iron, it gains improved durability.

Lead	2 sp	14	Lead is a heavy, grey, malleable metal.	A magical insulator, like rubber and electricity. Impervious to scrying, and can prevent magical lock-picking.
Mithral	500-1000 gp	27	Mithral is a silvery-blue, shining metal, derived from glittering, silvery-black ore.	Extremely difficult to work, but the stuff makes armor and weapons of unrivaled durability and quality. Sharpening has to be done by a professional, but it keeps an edge for years, and if done right, a mithral sword can cleave wood and bone like butter, and wouldn't dent to an elephant's charge. Not great for magic, though.

1. This term does not carry quite the same meaning as it does in, for example, the High and Lowland. There, the spiritual pertains to your relationship with your god, typically Deus and His Angelic Court. Both in Xulia and often elsewhere in the East, the spiritual pertains to your connection with the world, natural or otherwise. They're a lot like Fódhla's druids in this manner, though the views on technology and civilization will often differ. To most Xulians, spiritual perfection means being at peace with yourself, with your surroundings, and those who would be at peace with you, and being a furious adversary to any who would destroy the your peace or that of others.
